Spend time with the one you love this Valentines Day with our West Head Road Race. We have Grades A-D this month, with the start times reverting back to the more romantic time slot of 7:25am for the first grade to roll out. D Grade will be single lap which ,may suit junior riders. Enter online at www.trybooking.com/EQVY for $20 or on the day for $30.
There is no better way to spend the start of Valentines than with that one you spend most of the day thinking about. Enter online and spend a few quality hours together, who knows by next year you may have upgraded to a newer, lighter model? Make sure you get your entry in via our online entry form prior to race day. Enter online for $20 if you have a racing licence or purchase the day licence for an additional $30. This can all be done via www.trybooking.com/EQVY
If you wish to wait until race day then the price will be $30. Why the increase? This year we are under a lot more volunteer strain with having to operate a road closure and car convoys. This has meant we have had to triple the number of MWCC members who have to help out every month. If we have a large number of on the day entries, that requires more volunteers to run that part of the morning. Make it easier for us and cheaper for you by going online.
After last month’s race everyone entrant should have received a questionnaire about the race and the new format that we trialled in January. We have taken the feedback on board and will be making the following changes for February.
- Smaller group sizes. A number of riders felt that the larger group sizes made them feel unsafe and they found it difficult to move up the group without crossing the white lines. There was also some sentiment that such large groups made for negative racing as many riders were willing to just sit in. So we will split the groups this month.
- Later start time. We have moved it back to the first group rolling out at 7:25am (A Elite) and then the groups to follow. We can’t make it any later than that because we have to have the roads reopened just after 10am.
- Quicker presentations. The 4 lap races meant that there was quite a delay before presentations kicked off between some grades, we are hoping that we can reduce this by having the A Graders only complete 3 laps.
With the removal of the Akuna climb and turning before the descending the nasty little berg, has certainly changed the dynamics of the race and there will be more opportunities for those that are willing to attack to survive. Some questioned moving the finish line further along or having it on the downhill as you come past the Elvina Walking Track. Downhill finishers are never a good idea particularly with a number of relatively inexperienced racers. We are also restricted by race safety requirements that require sight lines before and after a finish line – hence the crest of the hills can be problematic.
We also wish to remind riders that it is an MWCC race rule that all riders race in their club kit on race day. If you are in a registered race kit and a registered rider for that kit -as per the NSW Cycling website – then we require that you race in A Grade. If you wish to be in a ‘race team’ then we think the most appropriate division is the top level of racing that has a number of race team riders and is one of the few grades where group tactics may come into play. If you feel that this is an unreasonable request, then please respect our rules and don’t enter. We gave some leeway in January because we knew that some riders and teams were busy setting themselves up over the Christmas New Year Period. If you don’t have a club kit from your club, then a plain white or black jersey is acceptable.
If you wish to check out the full calendar of MWCC races for the year then check out our race calendar which will include two handicap races this year. http://www.manlywarringahcc.org.au/events/be-amazed-mwcc-2016-race-calendar/
There will be no start or sign on at Akuna Bay, all riders will now sign on at Elvina Walking Track Car Park. If you choose to drive into the Park and park on West Head Road, please note that you will be under a controlled and restricted road until the race has finished.
The race course starts at Elvina Walking Track, riders will roll out and head south back towards Akuna Bay, however rather than turn at the junction, riders will turn at the crest of the hill and then make their way out to the usual turn around point.
The entry fee is $20 for Racing Licence riders.
MWCC riders may wish to take advantage of our season pass – which is an MWCC rider exclusive. www.trybooking.com/KACX
We encourage all riders to read our article on racing safely – http://www.manlywarringahcc.org.au/article/racing-for-the-win-safely/#more-1945
