The final West Head Road Race for 2016 will take place on December 11 and with no road race in January, it promises to be a popular morning for racing. So get your entries in and Santa may deliver you a podium for Christmas. Our Grades will start at 7am at this month to try and reduce the heat factor out on course and the burden on our volunteers marshaling cars.
Will you finish 2016 as a winner, or be writing to Santa requesting a lighter bike and more aero wheels post December 11? There is only one way to find out and that is to get your entries in via our online portal www.trybooking.com/EQVY Plenty of older riders have been writing to Santa early wanting an A Grade race without all the younger generation taking all the wins. They seem to ignore the age of riders such as Matt Hayman winning Paris Roubaix, maybe they need to accept that if they can’t win that particular race, then perhaps they aren’t that standard.
We have had requests for grades for people over 40, over 50, over 55, no teams, just teams, grade for riders only doing 100km a week, riders who are on strava, riders in matching kit only, just a grade that I can win because everyone else is a burglar. To all these requests, we remind people that, that sort of sport already exists, it is called triathlon. We have however come to a slight compromise with a rejuggling of the order. If should mean that you don’t need a 15 minute reading of the guidelines to work out what grade you are in. It is pretty simple, if you can’t win: train more or accept that maybe there are better riders out there.
Please note that the races are starting earlier this month. We hope this reduces the heat slightly but it also will hopefully assist us with our traffic control. We know that since we accommodate so many of your requests, you will have no problems accommodating this slight change.
A Grade Elite – 4 Laps
A Grade Masters 35 Over – 4 Laps
B Grade – 3 Laps
C Grade – 2 Laps
D Grade – 1 Lap
With distances from 1 Lap for D grade up to 4 laps for A Elite and A Masters, there is something for everyone of every standard. The 4 lap Elite race is the perfect leg turning for those thinking about Nationals in January and we will be hosting a number of riders who will be using this race as a tune up. Female riders can enter any grade they wish, regardless of age. Masters over 35 can still race in the Elite race if they wish.
Once again we will have the one lap D Grade division. Entry fees for this division is only $5 thanks to the support of Smartline Mortgages and since it has a focus on developing riders there will no be cash prizes for the winner. Day licences/3 Day Race Licences can be purchased for this division via the Cycling Australia website.
We are having an increasing number of juniors entering our C/D Grade division and to encourage this further, junior riders under 16 with a racing licence can race for free in this division or D Grade. Just enter online and select Junior Rider in the C/D Division or D Grade. This is an MWCC initiative to assist junior riders who are looking for some road racing experience.
Enter online for $25 if you have a racing licence or purchase the day licence for an additional $35. This can all be done via www.trybooking.com/EQVY
We also wish to remind riders that it is an MWCC race request that all riders race in their club kit on race day. If you are in a registered race kit and a registered rider for that kit -as per the NSW Cycling website – then we request that you race in A Grade (Ladies may race in their division of choice). If you wish to be in a ‘race team’ then we think the most appropriate division is the top level of racing that has a number of race team riders and is one of the few grades where group tactics may come into play and we promote the race teams within this division.
If you feel that this is an unreasonable request, then please respect our rules and don’t enter. We are happy to follow your rules at your club events, we request that you follow ours. If you don’t have a club kit from your club, then a plain white or black jersey is acceptable.
All riders will sign on at Elvina Walking Track Car Park. If you choose to drive into the Park and park on West Head Road, please note that you will be under a controlled and restricted road until the race has finished.
The race course starts at Elvina Walking Track, riders will roll out and head south back towards Akuna Bay, however rather than turn at the junction, riders will turn at the crest of the hill and then make their way out to the usual turn around point.
The entry fee is $25 for Race Licence riders.
We encourage all riders to read our article on racing safely – http://www.manlywarringahcc.org.au/article/racing-for-the-win-safely/#more-1945
Our races have a history of being incident free and we want to maintain that record. Remember that you are in control of your front wheel. Keep your brain switched on.
A Elite is a 4 lap race that will start at 7:00am. This grade is suitable for those riders who are strong A Grade riders in other races across Sydney, riders who are riding in either NRS teams, development teams or private race teams. Riders should be experienced and are looking for a very competitive and high class field. Race distance approximately 89km.
A Grade Masters. (7:05am) This will be a 4 lap race. This is for Masters riders aged over 35 (or any female) who still consider themselves A Grade riders even though they don’t want to actually race true A Grade riders. Race distance approximately 89km.
B Grade (7:15 and 7:20am) is a 3 lap event. Approx 65km. There are two grades, both exactly the same. Simply split to allow appropriate grade numbers. Same course, same prize money.
C Grade (7:22am) is a two lap event. Approx 45km.
C/D Grade (7:30am) this is a two lap event. Suitable for inexperienced or junior riders who if they have a race licence can race for free. Suitable for those may also consider that their racing career is entering its twilight years. Many ladies choose to enter this division.
D Grade (8am) this is a one lap event. Whether you are back from injury, new to racing, or seen the earth go around the sun many times. This is as much about rider development and the joy of racing. There is no prize money in this division, this should reinforce that this is about learning or enjoying your racing not being a hero who solos off at the start. Juniors are also welcome to race in this division.
ALL GRADES RACE FROM THE ROLL OUT, THERE IS NO NEUTRAL SECTION
All riders must show a current 2016/2017 Race Licence or purchase a One Day/3 Day Racing Licence from Cycling Australia and an approved Australian Standards Helmet at the sign on.

The start/finish line and presentation area is located at the Elvina Walking Track Car park on West Head Road.
We would request that you do not park in the Elvina Walking Track car park – this not only assists our marshalls when they head up there to set up for the finish, but also assists with our relations with the National Parks. This also gives riders more room to hang around in post race.
