MWCC with the support of Subaru covers the vast spectrum of road, mountain biking and cyclocross, so it only seemed appropriate that we welcome two Subaru Marathon riders into our club, with Mike Blewitt and Imogen Smith recently joining our ranks of riders. We think it is a perfect partnership to continue to grow our mountain biking club and also show the great support that Subaru offers riders on all forms of bikes.
If you ride on the dirt there is no doubt that you have come across the results of these riders or even read their articles on http://www.marathonmtb.com/ or follow their tweets on @marathonmtb they are two very accomplished riders. MWCC has a tradition of supporting and promoting women’s cycling and we believe that Imogen is a great ambassador of the sport.
Mike Blewitt has excels at marathon stage races which has seen him compete in the Cape Epic in South Africa, Sudety MTB Challenge, Transalp, Croc Trophy, Mongolia Bike Challenge and more. In 2013 Mike finished Transalp on the podium with team mate Imogen Smith, in the Mixed Pairs category – and in 2014 they finished in the same position at the Sudety MTB Challenge. In 2015 Mike is mixing some XCO racing with the Maverick Marathon Series and the MTBA XCM Series. He’s raced extensively throughout Europe, North America and Australia and has represented Australia twice at the UCI Marathon World Championships.
You can read about some of his adventures over on the Subaru Marathon page
Imogen Smith is a very tough and experienced rider. In 2014 she was the only female in the Elite Category at the Crocodile Trophy, the hardest multi day stage race for mountain biking in Australia. We know she races hard because in 2014 she destroyed three sets of kit and also went through two front and one rear XTR derailleurs, four XTR chains, one XT cassette, one XTR cassette, three sets of XTR brake pads, three lower jockey wheels, one set of Leonardi chain rings, five sets of Maxxis tyres, two ultra-light Mt Zoom headset top caps and four bottom brackets in her 50 days of bike racing.
Imogen also writes some insightful articles on the Subaru Marathon website, including this recent article on how to coach yourself for mountain biking.
We welcome them to the club and wish them all the best in their racing for 2015. You may have the opportunity to see them out on the road in our club kit at some of our races.
